An Update on Missouri’s REAL ID
Following some delays, the date has been set. Beginning on May 3, 2023, residents of Missouri and every U.S state and territory will be required to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or other compliant ID accepted by the Transportation Security Administration to board federally regulated domestic flights.
A REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or ID will also be required to enter many federal facilities.
The REAL ID Act of 2005 is a federal law that focuses on fraud protection, anti-terrorism and the security of official identification cards. The act establishes minimum security standards for driver’s licenses and IDs issued at the state level and prohibits federal agencies from accepting IDs that do not meet these standards. As of 2019, the state of Missouri achieved full implementation of all REAL ID requirements.
Missouri residents can apply for a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license at any one of their 170 license office locations statewide. Valid original documents you will need for obtaining a REAL ID include those that establish:
- Identity (one acceptable document to verify full legal name and date of birth);
- Lawful Status in the United States (one acceptable document to verify United States citizenship or immigration status);
- Social Security Number (one acceptable document);
- Missouri Residency (two acceptable documents verifying your Missouri residential address); and
- Additional items, such as a certified marriage license or court order, may be required to verify a new or prior name change if your name is different from the name on your identity and date of birth verification document.
You are welcome to apply for a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or ID before the expiration of your current valid license. All you need to know about the Missouri REAL ID program can be found here.
