Located on the Pacific Railroad train line, it part of the land given to Gregoire Sarpy by a Spanish lieutenant governor in 1802 as a hedge against English spread into territory that was, at the time, under Spanish control. Webster University, which enrolls roughly 22,000 students worldwide, was established in 1915 and offers more than 100 degree programs. The university, in east Webster Groves, is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The aptly named Webster Groves School District serves Webster Groves, along with the following private schools: Christ Community Lutheran School, Queen of Holy Rosary School, Holy Cross Academy, Holy Redeemer, Mary Queen of Peace, and Nerinx Hall. Did you know that the town had the only public high school open to black students in St. Louis County up until 1956, when the U.S. Supreme Court ordered desegregation? The high school, Douglass High School, morphed from an elementary school in the early 1900s into a high school in the 1920s.
