Fun Facts: Des Peres is thought to have been settled in 1700 by some Kaskaskia native Americans and some French settlers. Des Peres is French for “of the Fathers.” In the 1800s Europeans began settling in Des Peres, mostly by German immigrants from Virginia and the Carolinas. Des Peres is now a town of 4.32 square miles and 8,373 people, according to the 2010 census. In 1834 the Des Peres Presbyterian Church was founded and it was added to the National Register in 1978. The Lutheran Church opened a German Lutherans Orphans Home soon after the Civil War to house the growing number of children orphaned by the Civil War. The home, at the corner of Manchester and Ballas roads, closed in 1966 and became the Des Peres City Hall in 1973. Des Peres residents of school age attend schools in the Parkway School District or in the Kirkwood R-7 School District. Two private schools also are available for those in kindergarten through eighth grades, the St. Clement School, which is run under the direction of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. Louis, and St. Paul’s Lutheran School, which is affiliated with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

The town brags the international headquarters of two companies: Edward Jones Investments and Redbird Engineering. It also has the West County Mall, at the intersection of Manchester Road and I-270. Des Peres has a recreation center, the Des Peres Lodge, which has indoor and outdoor pools, and six parks: Des Peres Park, Harwood Park, Pioneer Park, Sugar Creek Park, the Phantom Forest conservation area and the Bittersweet Woods conservation area.
